Mauga's close-range primary fire DPS is very high, the highest among tanks. As a result, he can generally gain a big advantage in a 1v1 at close range.

Healing and durability from Cardiac Overdrive

Mauga's Overrun is not affected by crowd control from abilities such as Sleep or Mizuki:E. Also, a direct hit with Overrun deals 150 damage, so a direct hit can shave off more than half the HP of anything other than a tank.
